Automotive Data Reporting

Data access

From year 2000 most veichle manufacturers adopt the ODB-II standard for on-board diagnostic data access. Data can be acquired by connecting to the on-board computer via the "ODB port", which should be easily accessible from the cockpit.

From february 2024 a new ministerial notice mandates ODB based checks during veichle revisions.

Automated data pipeline

I could concieve a device (ESP32 based?) that semi-permanently connects to the ODB port, periodically exports data and then pushes it to a remote database for long-term storage and later processing. The device could work this way:

  • Periodically acquire data. (Local storage is necessary because ODB could work only when veichle is on, and data transmission would occur mainly when the veichle is off).

  • Detect known wifi network (or bt tehering link)

  • Connect to remote data storage

  • Push data from local storage
